An independent, international residential college offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma, English language courses, Liberal Arts courses, Gap Year Courses, IB teacher training workshops and University Foundation Courses

St. Clare's, Oxford is a non-selective, co-educational, day and boarding, sixth-form college located in elegant north Oxford and has been offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma since 1977, longer than any other school or college in England. The college has a worldwide reputation for expertise in providing the IB Diploma and embraces internationalism and academic excellence as its core values.

The campus is made up of over twenty large Victorian and Edwardian houses, all located within a short walking distance from one another, to which purpose-built facilities have been added. These include a beautiful library with over 35,000 volumes (including undergraduate-level textbooks), a dining room, a popular student café, science laboratories, classrooms, an art studio and homely boarding houses with a resident House Parent.

St Clare’s attracts students from over 45 countries, including a significant number of British students. The atmosphere is informal and friendly, with an equal emphasis on hard work and developing personal responsibility and mutual respect between staff and students. Each student has a Personal Tutor who oversees welfare and progress, and access to a school nurse and counsellor.

St Clare's has an especially wide range of subjects on offer at higher and standard level, in addition to Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), the core element of the IB Diploma. Moreover, students are encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunities that Oxford provides such as visiting its museums and attending open lessons or talks at Oxford University.

One of St Clare’s strengths is its outstanding Careers and Higher Education department. Students can take advantage of unlimited, expert career support, on finding the university course most suitable for their aspirations (worldwide), writing personal statements, preparing applications, CVs, interviews and more. All this, from day one and up to 3 years after graduation!

The college offers a Pre-IB course for students aged 15-16, who would like to join for 1, 2 or 3 terms and develop the study skills required to succeed in the IB Diploma and a 3-week summer IB Introduction Course, for those students who would like to get a taste of the diploma and experience studying in an international environment.

St Clare’s is also authorised to run IB Teacher workshops for both new and experienced teachers in co-operation with the IBO and many of their teachers are authors of curriculum textbooks and write exam papers.

Over the past three years, our students graduated with an average point score of 37, considerably higher than the world average of 31, with a pass rate of 99% (world pass rate is 79%). Over the same period, 34% of our students obtained 40+ points, placing them in the top 5%, and 7 students have attained the maximum score of 45 points, a grade achieved by only the top 1% of students around the world.

Entry to Clare’s is based on previous academic results and interview and offers are usually made on the day of the interview. There is also a competitive day and boarding scholarship programme awarded by examination, interview and group exercises.

Why not have a tour of the college?

The school opens its doors to visitors at the live Open Day in January and September and holds a virtual Open Morning in June and November. These events are a great opportunity for you to explore the campus, meet the staff and the students, and learn more about the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Private tours and taster days are also possible, please contact their Admissions Team for more info.

St Clare’s is most definitely different to any other college in Oxfordshire and rightly so. We have a different approach to studying, living, and developing as a young adult.
