d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent school in North Oxford for 11-18 year olds, with almost 600 students. Our overriding aim is to enable each of our students to achieve to the best of their potential, both academically and personally. Our main entry points are in Years 7 and 9 and over 120 students also join us for the Sixth Form each year from other schools. Years 7 to 11 are based at Leckford Place whilst our Sixth Form is based at 333 Banbury Road where recently built facilities, including a performance space, have opened up exciting opportunities for our students and staff.
Our school is a lively, close-knit yet relatively liberal community and one in which pupils feel engaged, happy and at ease with themselves and with their school environment. Relationships between staff and students are built on mutual respect and pupils are encouraged and stimulated to grow as confident, thoughtful and considerate people. We believe in breadth of education and aim to provide a versatile and flexible curriculum supplemented by a rich variety of extra-curricular activities. We want to enable our students to become independent learners and to develop the academic, evaluative, communication and social skills that will equip them for success in higher education and beyond, in a world where transferrable skills such as problem solving and critical thinking will be key.
We have small classes (our maximum class size is generally 15 from Years 7 to 11, and 10 in the Sixth Form) enabling us to create a learning environment in which students participate actively and staff are able to focus on the needs of every student. We are proud of the results that our students have achieved in public examinations in recent years and are keen to maintain our record of excellence in this area. In 2018, 55% of our A level grades were at A* or A and at GCSE 58% of grades were 9/8/7 (equivalent to A*/A).
We aim to foster a growing sense of self-confidence, initiative and individual responsibility in our students and they are given the space to be themselves and to grow and develop in a context in which they feel valued and secure. We encourage frequent and open communication with parents and aim to create an active partnership in which parents feel informed and involved. In our most recent Independent Schools Inspection the school was found to be ‘extremely successful’ in meeting its educational aims and rated ‘Excellent’, the highest rating given in ISI inspections, in each one of the following aspects: * The quality of students’ achievements * The contribution of curricular and extra-curricular provision * The contribution of teaching * The students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development * Arrangements for pastoral care * The contribution of welfare, health and safety * The quality of boarding and the outcomes for boarders * Leadership and management
