Francesca Shakespeare, a British-born artist and muralist has been painting for over three decades and is now based in her studio in Oxford.
Greatly influenced by frescos and medieval art, she has developed her own unique medium using simple raw materials: natural pigments, plasters, wax and gold leaf, and more recently lime, which gives the colours an intensity and richness unachievable with conventional paints. She builds up layers of texture which become almost bas-relief in some places; carved and incised in others.
After painting vivacious gouaches on the spot during her travels she returns to the studio to build up the plaster panels. By combining ancient methods with modern subject matter she creates a link between past and present – a kind of timelessness, both ancient relic and modern icon.
She runs workshops at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and other museums, schools and galleries during the year.
A full collection of of her paintings can be viewed on her website.
